The significant impact of breast cancer in our society underscores the critical need for proactive health initiatives. According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, an estimated 316,950 women and 2,800 men are projected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year, with an additional 59,080 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer. Amidst these sobering statistics lies a powerful message of hope: when detected early in its localized stages, the five-year relative survival rate for breast cancer is 99%. This compelling data formed the foundational impetus for the “Pink Power Outreach,” an event designed to translate awareness into direct action within our community.
The Pink Power Outreach was successfully executed on Saturday, October 4th, 2025, from 9:30am to 2:30pm on the theme ‘Defining Awareness and Defying Breast Cancer’. The initiative employed a multi-pronged strategy to maximize its reach and impact, comprising three key activities: clinical screenings, public sensitization and media engagement. The clinical screening was held at the premises of the Oforikrom Clinic providing free and accessible breast cancer screenings in a confidential and professional environment. The public sensitization campaigns were stationed at two high-traffic public areas, Tech and Anloga junctions, to engage directly with the community and raise awareness about the importance of early detection. The media engagement comprised of a dedicated radio session which was broadcast Spirit FM, amplifying the event’s message to a wider audience and fostering an informative dialogue on breast health.
This integrated approach ensuring a comprehensive blend of direct service, grassroots education, and broad public communication was made possible through the vital support of key partners, including the Lady Pharmacist Association of Ghana (LAPAG), P’s Foundation, and the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly. It was further strengthened by the efforts of student associations and volunteers from GPSA-KNUST, GPSA-UHAS, and the invaluable participation of nurses from the Oforikrom Clinic. Media engagement was also provided by Spirit FM and Space FM.
The Pink Power Outreach yielded tangible and impactful results, successfully translating its objectives into meaningful community health action. The clinical component of the event provided free breast cancer screenings to 63 individuals with nine women identified with unusual breast lumps. These individuals were promptly provided with referrals to partner hospitals for further diagnostic evaluation. Beyond immediate clinical findings, the event achieved significant success in its educational mission. A post-event survey revealed 80% of participants reporting a significant enhancement in their knowledge of breast cancer, including awareness of risk factors, self examination techniques, and the importance of regular screenings.
Furthermore, the outreach served as a catalyst for strengthening the local healthcare ecosystem. The collaboration forged new, and solidified existing, partnerships with local health service providers.
