As part of our school’s commitment to student progress, the Directorate of Student Affairs (DOSA), KNUST continually aims to cultivate leadership qualities through exploratory opportunities. To pave the path for the newly-elected student leaders to embark on such exploratory leadership adventures, DOSA organized an intensive two-day training for them together with all former student leaders. Spanning from the 9th to the 10th of September, 2025, the educative and interactive session was held at the KSB Block F Auditorium.
The program commenced promptly at 7:00 AM on the 9th of September, 2025. The moderator, Mrs.Theodora, opened the session, immediately captivating the room. Her voice, a blend of smooth warmth and understated authority, served not just to welcome the attendees but to model leadership from the very first moment. She expertly set a tone that was both inviting and purposeful, establishing a clear sense of direction and expectation right from the start.
Mr. Paul Kwadwo Addo, the deputy registrar of DOSA enlightened the students during his presentation on the topic, ‘Understanding the University Administrative System’ simplifying the organizational structure of KNUST. He elaborated on the fascinating hybrid yet predominantly top-down hierarchy in its administrative and governance functions citing the ranking going down from the Chancellor to the Chairman of the Council then the Vice Chancellor down to the administrative offices including the Provosts, Deans and the Department Heads. Several other distinguished guests graced the occasion imparting their knowledge and wisdom in leadership to the newly-elected student leaders particularly with all having the same clear and concise central advice: “Serve the students, but never forget you are students first.”
The various newly-elected student leaders of all departments were then introduced with many distinguished guests hammering on the laws and policies under which the school operates and continuously admonishing the newly-elected student leaders to abide by these rules. These students were advised to familiarise themselves with the leaders of authority in the KNUST community, understand their roles as well as their own responsibilities to help in fostering peace, maintaining good relations and ensuring the continuity of the university.
The programme came to a close with another central phrase admonishing the newly-elected student leaders ‘not to fight the system but rather learn to cooperate’ and urging them to always respect the system. Mrs.Theodora spoke finally with her last words serving as a reminder, “Serve the students, but never forget you are students first.”
