On Sunday, 23rd November 2025, GPSA-KNUST hosted the World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Webinar under the theme “Act Now: Protect Our Present, Secure Our Future.” The program began at 5:00 p.m. with a welcome address from Kingsley Ofori Ampofo, the International Relations Officer.
The guest speaker, Prof. (Mrs.) Vivian Estiapa Boamah, Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, delivered an insightful presentation on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). She outlined the global and regional statistics, emphasizing the heavy burden faced by sub-Saharan Africa. Prof. Boamah also discussed the major causes of AMR and highlighted the crucial roles individuals, pharmacists, farmers, and the general public must play to combat the growing threat.
A Q&A session followed, giving attendees the opportunity to seek further clarification on how AMR can be reduced within communities. One key recommendation from the session was the need for future outreach programs targeted at poultry farmers, to educate them on the dangers of antibiotic misuse and its contribution to AMR.
Overall, the webinar was educative, engaging, and a strong reminder of our collective responsibility in safeguarding the effectiveness of antimicrobial medicines.
